Tencent Cloud will be integrated into the Oort network as a full-node provider, thereby supporting Oort's data services. Tencent Cloud's storage and computing capacity will allow Oort to provide additional data services, as well as enhanced privacy and security, to applications deployed on clouds. To provide some context, Oort offers three core solutions:
Decentralized Storage Service (DSS) boasts maximum data privacy as customers’ data are stored on blockchains while offering as much as 80% lower costs compared to similar services from AWS.
DApp Development Service (DDS) allows customers to deploy decentralized apps (dApps) on Oort’s OSP blockchain. Examples of dApps are Opensea (NFT Marketplace) and Axie Infinity.
Web3 Web Hosting Service ensures no downtime and censorship from the host. Oort mentions that its web hosting service is also more cost-efficient than the competition.
Oort’s upcoming services include a decentralized data warehouse and decentralized compute service for data analytics, and other data-intensive workloads.
The Future of Cloud Storage is Decentralized?
Besides the proposed benefits of data privacy and cost-efficiency, does decentralized cloud storage offer enough to make customers transition? Apparently yes. Storj, another decentralized cloud object storage provider like Oort, has recently showcased its latest version at 2023 NAB which featured download speeds that were 40x faster than needed for HD videos, exceeding the performance of industry-leading solutions from hyperscalers. Storj can be up to 90% less expensive than other solutions as well. The distributed network of nodes storing data enables high performance and lower latency when accessing data globally compared to centralized data centers.
Tencent is not the only hyperscaler that sees the potential of decentralized cloud storage. Last September, Microsoft led a US$20m round for Web3 decentralized data warehouse startup Space and Time. While decentralized data warehouses are still very new, it is likely the solution that global organizations require for ultraperformance and cost-efficiencies. With costs being lower by as much as 80% compared to current solutions, decentralized cloud storage could be the service that drives cloud migrations, especially in more cost-sensitive regions like SE Asia. We expect more hyperscalers to partake in the Web3 cloud data storage space in the next 1-2 years.
